SOVRANA

Sovrana was built by Upham in 1969 and I believe she was the seventh and last in line.  After that, Holman turned to the 35ft Super Sovereign in glass rather than teak.   She is 31ft 6ins overall and billed on the plans as “a motor sailer that really sails”.  She has a 30hp diesel that I use quite a lot to help her point up ands to bash into a Channel chop.  We managed 7.4 knots (no engine) on a good reach under full sail the other day, wind about F3.  She has four bunks, full headroom (I am 6ft 3 and can stand easily) and the cockpit seats are six feet long.   I love her to bits.  I am her third owner.  First she was owned by a married couple, both doctors, then by a businessman.  Both owners kept her at Perceuil near St Mawes and latterly she was wintered in a shed so I managed to get her in superb condition which I am doing my best to maintain.  It’s a lot harder, however, when the boat is on an exposed mooring and wintered in the mud.  We’ve had a lot of big problems, including a hit-and-run collision while on her mooring which smashed in her toe-rail and cost thousands of pounds to fix.

Queen Bee had a new Autopilot fitted in June this year as the NECO one became unreliable and stopped working just when you needed it most.   I chose the Navman G Pilot and so far it
The Cockpit in pieces and full of tools the NECO control unit is on the left (The unit with the Dials) The 1/8 hp drive motor needed rewiring (The big light blue box on the right)
First of all make sure you have an expert. Mike works on the Hydraulics and Electronics on the top racing yachts.

Always Anchor somewhere where there is mobile coverage just incase you need advice.
New Autopilot Installed the small unit on the left where the NECO used to be. Of course it started to rain before we had finished and diluted the beer!
Just to be sure have a number of laptops to hand.
We decided to get a Life Jacket from the locker and test it during the summer. My son jumped into Fowey Harbour and the life Jacket failed to inflate. Even the Manual didn’t work. The reason - Cylinder unscrewed. So we checked the rest of them, make sure you check yours.
